Modify is one of the technical skills available in System Shock 2. This skill allows to modify ranged weapons to make them more effective. Each ranged weapon has two Modification Levels in addition to the base unmodified Level.

- As of September 29th, System Shock 2 has been updated on Steam to help be a bit more stable with Windows 10, fixing a bunch of bugs and glitches (all the glitches used for speedrunning are untouched) and a few fixes for a more modern experience. The game feels much smoother (at least from the last time I've played).

I am super stoked to play this game. I've wanted to play it for years but always put it off because of how old it is and since I spent so much money on my PC I always felt compelled to play games that can harness the power of it. Well, no more. It's time to re-experience the golden age of gaming. And by all accounts this is one of the best games not only of that era, but of all time.Anywho. I did some Googling on System Shock 2 difficulty settings and it seems that nobody is really discussing the settings, but rather the overall difficulty itself. Perhaps the difficulty settings are a recent addition?
I don't know but I cannot find any information on which setting is best for a first time player.I've already started the game on hard difficulty. I'm past the tutorial area but have not yet encountered my first enemy. I have the wrench, psi amp and energy pistol. For my character makeup I chose Marines, strength, maintenance, and cyber-affinity + energy weapons. The Psi route isn't for me and while I enjoy hacking, I'd prefer to rely more on weaponry.
I am quite experienced with these types of games. But I've also read that the game is quite hard. So naturally I didn't choose the 'impossible' difficulty for my first playthrough. Do you think 'hard' will be too difficult?

The mainstream AAA games they are making these days are, for the most part, challenge-less (excluding competitive multiplayer and Souls games).Something else unrelated to the topic. Would you recommend music on or off? I just got to the part where I encountered my first enemies. It seems like a very spooky game, then the super fast up-tempo techno music started playing. Seems like the atmosphere of the game might be at its best with no music.

The music is a point of contention, personally I think its great but a lot of people think the music in the early levels is too actiony, some of the are absolutely perfect for the atmosphere though. If you feel like the music is interfering with the atmosphere, turn it off I guess but I think its great.As for difficulty, the game will feel tense and hectic regardless of how difficult you set it due to quality sound design and limited ammo.
Its not actually a tremendously difficult game though regardless, you can beat it with just the wrench. By the way, repair is only used for fixing broken weapons while maintenance is the skill that lets you improve the quality of an item that isn't broken, that trips a lot of people up.My first playthrough I went standard weapons, maintenance, research, agility and hacking and I never had much difficulty, but its still nervewracking to play. Great game, I recommend checking out Thief, Dishonored, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Deus Ex and Ultima Undeworld if you end up liking it. I think Dishonored is a really great game, the reason there was so much backlash I think was because people were expecting it to be Thief when it was more like the story reactivity of Deus Ex with the combat of Dark Messiah in the setting of Thief. The stealth is fine, but its not the sole focus of the game.
The game is best played like the assassin it tells you that you are, you don't go full psycho killer but you don't reload every time you get caught in a vain attempt to achieve perfect stealth.Basically, play it without savescumming and not being too afraid of being detected and it is a huge amount of fun. The DLC/expansion improved on the storytelling a lot too, making it actually having a plot that's as compelling as the world its set in.But yeah, Dishonored is definitely in the same vein as the classic LGS games, Terri Brosius (voice of SHODAN) even has a writing credit in it, Arkane (along with Bethesda and I suspect Piranha Bytes) was one of the studios that really took heavy influence from LGS. Arx Fatalis is basically Ultima Underworld 3 and Dark Messiah is like a successful version of the swordfighting game LGS tried to make that eventually became Thief. Shit man, talk about a blast from the past. It amazing to think that we're now talking about a game that's 16 years old.To this day, I have never come across a game that captured my emotions like System Shock 2.

The music is top-notch and the graphics (at the time) were incredible. Which is why I feel terrible that I was never able to really get into Bioshock (being the spiritual successor and all).BTW have you installed all of the available graphics patches? There seem to be new ones released every few months (thankfully).In terms of difficulty (I'm really stretching my memory now), I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the overall game being difficult. The main thing is that you will have limited resources. As far I recall, the enemies are never all that difficult (easy in fact) if you have enough resources. But with guns breaking, and never having enough ammo, is what really turns up the heat.Shit, I just remembered: there are auto-cannons in the later levels. Be careful around those things.
Best thing to do is (if possible) sneak around them, hack into them, and make them friendly. They're immensely helpful in mowing down bad guys.

This is the description of the mod pack from the person who put it together:'I have put together a collection of mods to improve the graphics and audio of System Shock 2. This package is intended to stay as close to the original look as possible, so you won’t find any mods in the pack that vary too far from how the game originally looked.' If you know of any mods that can make it look even better, let me know!
I don't mind if it varies too much from how the game originally looked since I never played the vanilla version. With the mod pack I'm using, it seems that what it mainly does is replace images and text in the game to be clear and legible as well as make some of the textures look not quite as 16 years old as they are.So you think I should turn the music back on? I've heard others say it's better without it. Of course this is relative and a matter of personal preference.

I love electronic music but if that fast techno plays throughout the game I think it might detract from the atmosphere. Minus actual difficulty settings, how hard or easy the game is for you can vary incredibly depending upon what skills and whatnot you choose.A novice, know-nothing player will have a hugely difficult time focusing on PSI abilities, but will end up being fairly successful if you just focus on commonly found weapons.This is exacerbated if you know what skills are useless and what skills peak at which levels.Your starting character sounds fine.
How To Modify Computer System
If you want to see most of what the game has to offer and not have any paths closed for exploration, normal weapons + hacking + maintenance ends up with a build that's easy to build, maintain, use, and find weapons for. SS2 is one of the best games I have ever played, and I replay it regularly. You're in for a treat.Play it on Normal. On harder difficulties you must know the skill tree and the upgrades and plan ahead.
